KU Scholarships for Military-Affiliated Students

KU offers a variety of scholarships specifically for our military-affiliated students.
Scholarships are awarded each spring for the following academic year to current and newly-admitted KU students pursuing degree programs at any of our campuses.

Student Veteran Scholarships

PURPOSE: To recognize and financially assist student veterans, as well as those currently serving, who have demonstrated academic potential and superior leadership through their military and community service.

AMOUNT: $1,500 to $5,000. One-half of each scholarship will be dispersed to the recipient per semester.

ELIGIBILITY: The scholarships are open to current full-time KU students in good academic standing or newly admitted students for the Fall 2019 semester, in one of the following categories:

  • Honorably discharged service member/veteran
  • Current service member (Active Duty, Reserves, National Guard)

APPLICATION: Scholarships are awarded according to military service, academic merit, community involvement, and financial need. Applicants must provide the following in their application:

  • Personal narrative: Provide a one-page summary discussing your academic and professional goals and the extent of your financial need.
  • Summary of military service: Provide a one- to two-page summary discussing your military service, e.g. duties performed, areas where you demonstrated leadership, deployments/duty stations, awards/distinctions, etc. – include any pertinent information not included in your personal narrative. 
  • Summary of activities and achievements: Provide a one-page summary describing your recent involvement with any community service, extra-curricular activities and leadership experience. Please list any elected positions or offices held in any organizations.
  • Resume
  • Personnel record/DD-214/NGB Form 22 (excluding or redacting social security number is recommended)

Wounded Warrior Scholarship

PURPOSE: To help provide higher education opportunities for those whose lives have been altered due to injury or illness while serving in military.

AMOUNT: Up to $10,000/year. One-half of each scholarship will be dispersed to the recipient per semester.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to current KU students in good academic standing or newly admitted students for the Fall semester, in one of the following categories:

  • Honorably discharged veteran of the uniformed services with DoD or VA disability rating associated with a combat or hostile-related injury sustained in the line of duty.
  • Honorably discharged veteran of the uniformed services with a service-connected DoD or VA disability rating of 50% or greater.
  • Purple Heart recipient, regardless of DoD/VA disability rating.
  • Primary caregiver of service member or veteran with a significant service-connected disability.
  • Spouse/dependent of a veteran with a DoD/VA service-connected disability rating of 100%.
  • Surviving spouse or dependent of a service member who died in the line of duty or a service member/honorably discharged veteran who died as a result of service-connected disabilities.

APPLICATION: Applicants must provide the following in their application:

  • Personal narrative: Provide a one-page summary discussing about your academic and professional goals and the extent of your financial need.
  • Military service: Describe your/your sponsor’s military service, how the injury/illness occurred and how this has impacted your life – include any pertinent information not included in your personal narrative. 
  • DD-214/personnel record or DD-1300 “Report of Casualty” (excluding or redacting social security number is recommended)
  • Veteran’s percentage letter or disability rating letter from the VA, if applicable.

Military Family Scholarships

SCHOLARSHIP PERIOD OPEN: March 1-31 of each year. Application link will be provided here close to the beginning of the open period.

PURPOSE: To recognize and financially assist spouses and dependents of current military and prior-service veterans.

AMOUNT: $500 

ELIGIBILITY: Open to current full-time KU students in good academic standing or newly admitted students for the Fall semester, in one of the following categories (*Post-9/11 GI Bill users at the 100% rate are not eligible for this scholarship.):

  • Spouse/dependent of an honorably discharged service member/veteran
  • Spouse/dependent of current service member (Active Duty, Reserves, National Guard)

APPLICATION: Scholarships are awarded according to academic merit and financial need. Applicants must provide the following in their application:

  • Personal narrative: Provide a one-page summary discussing your academic and professional goals and the extent of your financial need.
  • Summary of family’s military service: Provide a one- to two-page summary discussing your sponsor’s military service and how that has impacted your life, e.g. deployments/duty stations, something you’re proud of, their role in the service, your role in your family supporting their service, etc. – include any pertinent information not included in your personal narrative. 
  • Resume
  • Personnel record/DD-214/NGB Form 22 (excluding or redacting social security number is recommended)
